Film Emphasis in Art History at Sonoma State University

The Film Emphasis introduces students to the study of art history and situates film studies within that discipline; describes the development of the film medium historically; examines the evolution of distinct aesthetic traditions of filmmaking, western and nonwestern; teaches film theory and film analysis; offers more focused courses on specific topics; and allows students to explore various approaches to the study of the medium through already existing courses in other departments. As a demonstration of mastery of skills and knowledge in the field, the Film Emphasis requires students to write a senior paper which is an original piece of research and interpretation.
