ALFIE (1966) C widescreen 114m dir: Lewis Gilbert
w/Michael Caine, Shelley Winters, Millicent Martin, Julia Foster, Jane Asher, Shirley Ann Field, Vivien Merchant, Eleanor Bron, Denholm Elliott, Alfie Bass
This is the film that catapulted Michael Caine to stardom, and his performance as an unscrupulous, womanizing male is excellent. Alfie is a lecher, and he lets you know it right from the start. (He directly adresses the audience and it really works to the benefit of the film.) Alfie's romantic excursions are honestly portrayed.
Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Actor (Caine), Supporting Actress (Merchant), Screenplay (Bill Naughton), and Song ("Alfie").
