ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO (1940) B/W 140m. dir: Anatole Litvak
w/Bette Davis, Charles Boyer, Jeffrey Lynn, Barbara O'Neil, Virginia Weidler, Walter Hampden, Harry Davenport, Fritz Leiber, Helen Westley, Sibyl Harris
From The Movie Guide: "A classic of unrequited love, based on the best-selling Rachel Field novel set in 19th-century France. Governess Davis falls in love with nobleman Boyer who has engaged her to care for his children. Litvak's smooth, understated treatment produces restrained, ageless performances from both stars. Oscar-nominee Barbara O'Neil (best remembered as Scarlett O'Hara's mother in GWTW) almost steals the picture in a serpentine portrayal of Boyer's possessive, neurotic wife. This moody, elaborate production, greatly enhanced by its [Max] Steiner score, is a deft example of the 'women's picture.'"
ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO was nominated for three Oscars: Best Picture, Supporting Actress (O'Neil), and Cinematography (Ernest Haller).
