DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN (1985) C 104m dir: Susan Seidelman

w/Rosanna Arquette, Madonna, Aidan Quinn, Mark Blum, Robert Joy, Laurie Metcalf, Anna Levine, Bill Patton, Peter Maloney, Steven Wright

From The Movie Guide: "This is one of the most charming low-budget films in years, a freewheeling, light-hearted farce that gives some new twists to old plot devices. Rosanna Arquette is Roberta, a bored New Jersey housewife married to swimming pool magnate, Gary (Mark Blum). To spice up her bland life, Roberta takes to reading the personal ads and becomes intrigued by a periodically recurring notice headlined 'Desperately Seeking Susan.' On a whim, she goes off to New York City and eventually finds the mysterious Susan (Madonna). She follows Susan around the city and watches as the wildly garbed woman sells her leather jacket at a used clothing store. Roberta buys the jacket, not realizing it contains Egyptian earrings Susan has stolen from a murdered mobster. The plot twists are fairly simple, but that really doesn't matter in this energetic and well-acted comedy. Director Susan Seidelman guides her cast with a light, enthusiastic touch, never making more out of her frothy material than need be."
