DIVORCE, ITALIAN STYLE (1962) B/W widescreen 108m dir: Pietro Germi
w/Marcello Mastroianni, Daniela Rocca, Stefania Sandrelli, Leopoldo Trieste, Odoardo Spadaro, Margherita Girelli, Angela Cardile, Bianca Castagnetta, Lando Buzzanca
From The Movie Guide: "To die laughing for. Rocca is a whining sex-crazed Sicilian wife who drives husband Mastroianni to consider divorce. Unfortunately for Rocca it is easier to murder in Italy than it is to divorce. And that's precisely what is done. The scheming Mastroianni then goes on to marry the proverbial nymphet next door after his wife is out of the picture. A brilliant comic performance from Mastroianni which has been compared to the deadpan style of [Buster] Keaton. It earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, as well as Best Actor accolades from the Golden Globes and the British Film Academy. Considered by some to be one of the greatest modern comedies."
DIVORCE, ITALIAN STYLE won an Oscar for Best Original Story and Screenplay (Ennio DeConcini, Alfredo Giannetti, Pietro Germi). Besides Mastroianni's Best Actor nomination, the film was also nominated for Best Director.
