JOYLESS STREET (Germany, 1925) "silent" B/W 95m dir: G.W. Pabst
w/Werner Krauss, Greta Garbo, Asta Nielsen, Agnes Esterhazy, Valeska Gert, Jaro Furth
Silent melodrama about the miserable people who live on a single block in post-WWI Vienna, some newly poor and all at the mercy of black marketeers. In one home, inflation has shattered the family's security and a daughter (Garbo, in her last European film) considers working in a brothel to help her father. A bittersweet, realistic work with lyrical camera movements and excellent performances. Marlene Dietrich can be spotted as an extra.
