MOONSTRUCK (1987) C widescreen 102m dir: Norman Jewison
w/Cher, Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Julie Bovasso, John Mahoney, Louis Guss, Feodor Chaliapin Jr., Anita Gillette
Cher plays an Italian-American woman who falls in love with her fiancé's brother (Cage). Meanwhile, other members of her family are having romantic complications, and it all seems influenced by the full moon. Dukakis is wonderful as Cher's weary mom.
From The Movie Guide: "MOONSTRUCK brilliantly captures its Italian-American milieu. Director Jewison and screenwriter [John Patrick] Shanley have fashioned a charming, funny tale of infidelity and transcendent love whose cultural setting provides both content and context. A symbol of the undeniable power of and unpredictability of passionate love, the moon that glows magically over the Manhattan skyline as the events in the film transpire is there not only for Cher and Cage but also for Gardenia and Dukakis."
The film won Oscars for Best Actress (Cher), Supporting Actress (Dukakis) and Screenplay (Shanley). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (Gardenia).
