Diana (Baring), a young actress, is accused of killing one of her friends, tried, and sentenced to death by a jury. Jury member Sir John Menier (Marshall), an actor-manager and gentleman knight, remains unconvinced of her guilt and makes an attempt to locate the actual murderer. Visually astonishing, MURDER also makes creative use of sound by recording a character's spoken thoughts on the soundtrack. While the innocent person accused became a staple of Hitchcock's later films, the director would expand on this idea of theatricality in his mystery STAGE FRIGHT. Hitchcock also directed a German version of MURDER, entitled MARY, starring Alfred Abel."
