THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD! (1988) C widescreen 85m dir: David Zucker

w/Leslie Nielsen, George Kennedy, Priscilla Presley, Ricardo Montalban, O.J. Simpson, Nancy Marchand, John Houseman, Reggie Jackson, Jeannette Charles, Curt Gowdy

From The Movie Guide: "The [Jerry] Zucker, [Jim] Abrahams, and [David] Zucker writing-directing team, who made a huge splash with AIRPLANE!, based THE NAKED GUN on their hilarious but short-lived TV show 'Police Squad.' Leslie Nielsen reprises his role as bumbling police lieutenant Frank Drebin, who becomes embroiled in a case involving suave heroin smuggler Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban). Drebin falls for Ludwig's assistant, Jane (Priscilla Presley), who is just as dim and clumsy as he is. Meanwhile, Drebin's boss (George Kennedy) learns that there will be an assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth (played by look-alike Jeannette Charles) during her visit to Los Angeles.

"Merely recounting the plot of any ZAZ comedy utterly fails to convey the lunacy and, believe it or not, charm of the production. From the inspired opening credit sequence, in which a camera mounted behind the flashing light of a police car drives down city streets, through a car wash, into a building, down a corridor, and finally into a women's locker room; to the sight of the villain falling off a tier in a ballpark and being crushed by a bus, a steamroller, and then a marching band, THE NAKED GUN is a continuous stream of verbal and visual gags that come so fast, you don't have time to realize how bad/old/corny they are."
