ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) C widescreen 136m dir: Roman Polanski

w/Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Victoria Vetri, Patsy Kelly, Elisha Cook Jr., Charles Grodin

Director Polanski adapted Ira Levin's bestselling novel about witchcraft as practiced on New York's Central Park West, and the result is this exciting horror film. Farrow is solid as an innocent wife sold by her ambitious husband to a cult of devil-worshippers.

From The Movie Guide: "Truly frightening because so much of it is so plausible, ROSEMARY'S BABY is one of the finest examples of modern horror, a milestone in the evolution of the genre. Although the subject matter is ultimately supernatural, the treatment is very realistic. Perhaps the film's most disturbing aspect is that the fears and anxiety that Rosemary experiences initially seem like an understandable response for a neurasthenic young woman to have when an 'alien' being is growing within her. The brilliance of the film is that it takes this realistic basis and builds upon it with supernatural methaphors that make pregnancy a rich and strange condition."

Ruth Gordon won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, and the film was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
