SEPARATE TABLES (1958) B/W widescreen 100m dir: Delbert Mann
w/Deborah Kerr, Rita Hayworth, David Niven, Wendy Hiller, Burt Lancaster, Gladys Cooper, Cathleen Nesbitt, Felix Aylmer, Rod Taylor, Audrey Dalton
Faithful film version of Terrence Rattigan's two one-act plays about the guests at a British seaside resort and their individual dramas.
From The Movie Guide: "This is adult, intelligent stuff, marvelously shaded by the amalgamation of talents. That Niven and Hiller are sublime is almost to be expected. But one watches Hayworth with genuine surprise, as the poignant divorcee watching her beauty slip away. This kind of part is usually the province of Englishwomen --- Vivien Leigh, for example. It's the only strong mature role she ever got to play. Lancaster, cast against two women whose talents have an air of gentility, is able to tone down his trademark bravura."
SEPARATE TABLES won two Oscars: Best Actor (Niven) and Supporting Actress (Hiller). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Actress (Kerr), Adapted Screenplay (Rattigan, John Gay), Cinematography (Charles Lang Jr.), and Score (David Raksin).
