THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES (1968 C widescreen 107m dir: Ulu Grosbard

w/Patricia Neal, Jack Albertson, Martin Sheen, Don Saxon, Elaine Williams, Grant Gordon

Compelling film version of Frank D. Gilroy's Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a young man (Sheen) who returns home from Army duty after WWII, only to find his quarreling parents (Neal, Albertson) still engaged in battle. Gilroy adapted his play for the screen.

From The Movie Guide: "The movie was not a hit, despite the terrific acting, sharp writing, and outstanding direction from Grosbard, who also staged the play. Never does the emotion explode into oratory, so almost every scene has an underlying tension that continues to bubble."

THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES received two Oscar nominations: Best Actress (Neal) and Supporting Actor (Albertson).
