THE THREE AGES (1923) B/W "silent" 85m dirs: Buster Keaton, Eddie Cline
w/Buster Keaton, Wallace Beery, Margaret Leahy, Joe Roberts, Lilian Lawrence, Oliver Hardy
This is Keaton's second feature film (after OUR HOSPITALITY) and it's a parody of the historical epics of D.W. Griffith and C.B. DeMille, with an especially pointed aim taken at Griffith's INTOLERANCE. The film intercuts three stories taking place in three different historical periods: one story is of a hapless caveman, one is set in Roman times, and one is contemporary. All are hilariously funny, if not as elegantly brilliant as Keaton's later features.
