YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER (1942) B/W 97m dir: William A. Seiter

w/Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth, Adolphe Menjou, Leslie Brooks, Adele Mara, Isobel Elsom, Gus Schilling, Barbara Brown, Douglas Leavitt, Catherine Craig

Jerome Kern's music, Fred's dancing, and Rita's charm combine with delightful results in this tune-filled tale of a father (Menjou) who invents a fictitious suitor for his idealistic daughter (Hayworth) and then has to produce him in the flesh (that's where Fred comes in). This is the second and final screen pairing of Astaire and Hayworth, the first being 1941's YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH.

From The Movie Guide: "Hayworth is a wonderful complement to Astaire in the dance numbers, gliding about the floor with natural ease and looking ravishing. Her singing is dubbed for the film by Nan Wynn."

YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER was nominated for three Oscars: Best Score (Leigh Harline), Song ("Dearly Beloved" by Kern and Johnny Mercer), and Sound (John Livadary).
