THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY (1964) B/W widescreen 115m dir: Arthur Hiller
w/James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas, James Coburn, Joyce Grenfell, Edward Binns
Paddy Chayefsky's skillful screenplay is adapted from William Bradford Huie's book about a navy officer whose main job during WWII is to supply his superiors with a variety of creature comforts, including "girls." The film actually has something intelligent to say, and the performances are solid.
THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY was nominated for two Oscars: Best B & W Cinematography (Philip Lathrop) and B & W Art Direction (George W. Davis, Hans Peters, Elliot Scott).
