JANE EYRE (1944) B/W 96m dir: Robert Stevenson

w/Joan Fontaine, Orson Welles, Margaret O'Brien, Peggy Ann Garner, John Sutton, Sara Allgood, Henry Danielle, Agnes Moorehead, Elizabeth Taylor, Aubrey Mather

This intense adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's Victorian novel is not as luminous as William Wyler's earlier WUTHERING HEIGHTS, but it's a strong film, nonetheless. All the Gothic elements are in place: creepy sets, moans in the night, the tortured hero, the hapless governess. Aldous Huxley collaborated on the screenplay. John Houseman (long Welles' collaborator) produced.
